Editorial Reviews
Book Description
As I have indicated in my other book descriptions, when I travel I am
never satisfied with guides that are available pertaining to our history
and heritage. Most guides serve special interests or are encumbered
by financial restrictions. In promoting First Nations Tourism these
difficulties have only been amplified. A heritage as rich and as colorful
as that of our First Nations' people, I have always felt should start with
the best the culture has to offer, in order to draw people in. This guide
illustrates through colorful photos the artists, their magnificent art, the
heritage, the attractions, the parks and the tours, of our First Nations
people. As all our guides do, we have included brief historical
overviews on each town, village and area.
We start our Native Alaska & Yukon Guide in Alaska visiting Tlingit
villages from Ketchikan to Haines and finally arrive in Anchorage in
time for the AFN Arts & Crafts Show. We visit the artists, the galleries
and the museums both in the major cities and smaller towns. First
Nations Tourism is growing and many areas have villages, tours,
events and heritage available now to be explored. Travelling further
into central and northern Alaska we look at the Aleut, Inupiat and
Yupik people from the Aleutian chain to Shishmaref to Barrow and
back to Fairbanks. In the Yukon we look at the numerous First Nations
Interpretive Centres and Museums from Haines Junction to Whitehorse
and beyond.
We start our Northwest Coast Native Guide by visiting the many
galleries in Vancouver that sell First Nations art. When ever we
encounter a museum with a significant First Nations collection we
include it as well. One of the best is the Museum of Anthropology at
the University of BC. We travel on up to Whistler to visit more galleries
and then into the Fraser Canyon up to Prince George, finally arriving
at*Gitanmaax an ancient Gitksan (People of Xsan) community
strategically located at the confluence of the Xsan (the Skeena River)
and Xsan Un Do’oo (the Bulkley River) near Hazelton, British Columbia.
The Nisga'a live at New Aiyansh, Canyon City, Greenville and Kinkolith
about a two hour drive from Hazelton. We visit Terrace, Kitimat and the
Haisla before arriving in Prince Rupert and the marvelous Tsimshian
Longhouse which is home to the Museum of Northern BC. Our next
stop is Haida Gwaii to visit the Haida Nation off the northern coast of
British Columbia. Continuing on we travel to Vancouver Island and the
wealth of First Nations heritage on the northern end and middle of the
island at Port Hardy, Alert Bay, Campbell River, Tofino and Duncan.
Before leaving the island we visit Victoria, the capitol of British
Columbia and the surrounding area.
In Washington State we visit the Olympic peninsula and see
archaeological sites, heritage centres and long houses both new and
ancient. We visit the Yakima Tribe of central Washington State and
much more.
In Oregon, Kah-Nee-Ta's spectacular arrow-shaped Lodge, perched
high above the Warm Springs River, welcomes guests to the
ambiance that is Kah-Nee-Ta. Pendelton, the home of the Pendelton
Rodeo was also the home of Jackson Sundown who rode with Sitting
Bull at the Battle of Little Big Horn in his youth.
In California we explore as far south as Sacramento and the Bay area
of San Francisco.
It is hoped that this guide will contribute to the advancement of First
Nations Tourism by informing people of the importance and beauty of
the First Nations people and their distinct culture as only seen here in
the Pacific North West.
This guide, as all our guides, can be used as a travel companion as
you travel to and around the various locales. If you prefer to stay at
home and be an arm chair traveler, that is all right as well.
